Putin Presidential Bid? Web Sites Hint At Possibility

MOSCOW — A Russian state agency has registered two Web address appearing to signal Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's intentions to reclaim the presidency in the 2012 election.

The online database of state register Reg.ru shows that the Federal Bodyguard Service in late August registered two Cyrillic-script addresses, Putin-2012.rf and Putin2012.rf.

The agency, which is responsible for protecting top officials, did not register a similar address with the name of President Dmitry Medvedev.

Putin served two presidential terms in 2000-2008 and shifted into the premier's seat after his hand-picked successor, Medvedev, was elected. He is widely believed to continue calling the shots.

Putin and Medvedev both have said they would discuss later who would run for president in 2012 and emphasized they wouldn't challenge one another.

Elizabeth Warren: The Right Appointment at the Right Time

The case for appointing Elizabeth Warren to set up the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) was, at the end of the day, overwhelming. She had the original idea, she helped build political support and her own credentials have been only strengthened by her work as head of the Congressional Oversight Panel for TARP. On Friday, the president will reportedly appoint Professor Warren as an assistant to the president and special adviser to the Treasury Secretary, with the task of setting up and initially running the CFPB.

Some of Ms. Warren's supporters think this move is something of a half-measure -- they would have preferred a conventional nomination, with all the fanfare of a classic confirmation battle in the Senate. There is something to be said for that, but the interim appointment route is by far the best way forward for three reasons.

First, this form of appointment puts Elizabeth Warren to work right away -- on the issues of consumer protection that are first order both for ordinary families and for the macroeconomy. You really cannot build a sustainable economic recovery on the back of exploitative or abusive behavior by the financial sector. These issues are urgent and need resolution as soon as possible.

Second, the president finally has an adviser who understands the financial sector and who has healthy skepticism about its intentions and actions. As we documented at length in 13 Bankers, too many top policy people -- both in this administration and all its recent predecessors -- have been overly inclined to accommodate the interests of finance, particularly the big banks. In this regard, putting Ms. Warren directly into the White House with the highest possible level of access is exactly the right thing to do -- much better, for example, than making her purely a Treasury appointment.

Third, this step does not avoid a debate in the Senate -- it merely postpones it to a more advantageous moment. Presuming that Ms. Warren is nominated for a five-year term as head of the CFPB, she would go before the Senate Banking Committee with a real track record of achievement as interim head. The debate would not be about what the agency could do, but rather what it has already done -- and what it is set up to do next. These are exactly the right terms on which to bring out into the open all those who think that the financial sector only ever behaves well -- or that enforcing sensible rules on lenders would somehow bring the economy to its knees.

Barney Frank has the right overall assessment, telling the New York Times:

"I congratulate the administration on its creativity. There's no possibility she would take something like this unless she was fully empowered to do the job."

Meg Whitman Campaign Spending BREAKS RECORD: $119 Million In Personal Funds Burned So Far On California Race

s-MEG-WHITMAN-CAMPAIGN-SPENDING-RECORD-large SAN FRANCISCO — Meg Whitman, the Republican candidate for California governor, has surpassed New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg for the highest personal contribution in American campaign history.

Whitman's campaign reported another $15 million contribution late Tuesday, bringing her personal donation to $119 million.

The billionaire former eBay chief executive's spending surpasses the previous record of $108 million set by Bloomberg in his bid for a third term last year.

Bloomberg spent about $185 per vote for his re-election, and he did not take donations.

Whitman, however, has spent the summer aggressively fundraising for her general election race against Democratic Attorney General Jerry Brown.

Whitman planned a visit Wednesday to the San Francisco headquarters of Yelp, an online review site.

Salvatore Giunta To Get Medal Of Honor, 1st Living Afghan War Veteran Receiving One

s-SALVATORE-GIUNTA-large DES MOINES, Iowa — A 25-year-old soldier from Iowa who exposed himself to enemy gunfire to try to save two fellow soldiers will become the first living service member from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to receive the Medal of Honor, the White House announced Friday.

President Barack Obama phoned Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta, on Thursday at the base in Italy where he's stationed to tell him he'd be receiving the nation's highest military honor, Giunta's father told The Associated Press. He will become the eighth service member to receive the Medal of Honor during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The seven previous medals were awarded posthumously.

"It's bittersweet for us," said Steven Giunta, of Hiawatha. "We're very proud of Sal. We can't mention that enough, but in this event, two other soldiers were killed and that weighs heavy on us. You get very happy and very proud and then you start dealing with the loss as well. You can't have one without the other."

Giunta was serving as a rifle team leader with Company B 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment when an insurgent ambush split his squad into two groups on Oct. 25, 2007, in the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan, the White House said in a news release.

Giunta went above and beyond the call of duty when he exposed himself to enemy fire to pull a fellow soldier back to cover. He engaged the enemy again when he saw two insurgents carrying away a wounded soldier, 22-year-old Sgt. Joshua C. Brennan, of McFarland, Wis. Giunta killed one insurgent and wounded the other before tending to Brennan, who died the next day.

"His courage and leadership while under extreme enemy fire were integral to his platoon's ability to defeat an enemy ambush and recover a fellow American soldier from enemy hands," the White House said.

Giunta, who enlisted in the Army shortly after graduating from Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, is now stationed in Italy with the Battle Company of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He was in his second tour of duty in Afghanistan at the time of the ambush.

Giunta, who was previously awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart, among other medals, called his parents after hearing from the president, his father said.

KIRSTIN SAYS: Not Only Is Charice ‘The Most Talented Girl In The World,’ She’s Also The Shyest!

61523785 At Tuesday night’s Glee premiere and afterparty, the 18-year-old singer spent most of the night with her family and close friends – and seemed nervous around everyone else!
I know how much you all love Charice, and after hearing hear rendition of “Listen” from Dreamgirls at the Glee premiere Sept. 7, I’m right there with you! That said, given how popular the 18-year-old international superstar is, I was surprised by how shy and quiet she is for a girl with such a huge voice!

As we walked onto the Paramount Studios lawn for the premiere afterparty, guests clamored to chat with the show’s stars. Even though she was deemed “the most talented girl in the world” by Oprah, Charice seemed unsure of herself and super shy, sticking close to her family and friends for most of the party.

But despite her shyness, Charice was the most approachable celebrity there. When I approached her for a photo she cheerfully agreed, “Of course!” and even waited while we got the camera to work. TOTALLY not a diva!

“You barely come up to my chin!” I said, bending down to be closer to this little 4’11” peanut. She laughed and nodded her head. When my group and I told the pint-sized Filipina actress she was a standout in the premiere episode, she flashed a big smile and said, “Thank you so much!” appreciatively.

Charice continued to wave and smile at us for the rest of the night — as though SHE was the one who was honored to meet us, notthe other way around.

I loved meeting (and supporting) this incredibly talented and down-to-earth celebrity. But now I have one request: Charice, please stay humble…it’s really so refreshing to meet someone without attitude in Hollywood!

‘Teen Mom’ Stars Catelynn & Fiancé Tyler Still Miss Their Adopted Baby Carly!

090810_teenmom_catelynn_tyler_carly_XXXX_ Though Carly is being raised by an ‘amazing’ couple, Catelynn & Tyler wonder what parenthood would have been like.
Teen Mom favorite Catelynn Lowell (seriously, everyone loves her) says she doesn’t regret putting baby Carly up for adoption. In fact, it’s made her relationship with fiancé Tyler Baltierra, 18, even stronger. “I think we probably would have struggled a lot [if we kept Carly],” Catelynn, 18, tells People. “That was my biggest concern — I didn’t want to struggle, and I didn’t want [Carly] to be around that.”

“When I see a dad and a little girl walking to the park, I think, ‘I wish I could do that right now,’” Tyler admits.

“You have your days when you miss her,” Catelynn adds.

In my two days short time covering Teen Mom for HollywoodLife.com, I’ve noticed that Catelynn is arguably the most popular of the show’s stars. She seems to be getting the most attention from fans, whether it’s sympathy for her and Tyler having to give Carly up for adoption, or sympathy for her having to deal with her psycho-witch of a mom, April. (You know, the mom who repeatedly called her a b***h on the Sept. 7 episode.)

SAD NEWS! HBO Tells Us Robert Pattinson Is NOT Going To Be In The ‘Entourage’ Finale!

090710_Entourage_pattinson_inset_02 Hollywood’s rumor mill is going into overdrive with news that Twilight’s Robert Pattinson is guest starring on HBO’s Sept. 12 finale of their hit show Entourage…but they tell HollywoodLife.com a different story!
UPDATE, 10:30 a.m. PST: HBO reps for Entourage tell HollywoodLife.com we’re NOT going to be blessed with R-Patz’s presence on Entourage this week. “It’s absolutely not true,” the reps said. “We’ve been getting a lot of calls about that this morning, but it’s not happening.” Bummer!

R-Patz…comedian? We never thought we’d see the day but, from what’s buzzing around Hollywood, it sounds like Robert Pattinson is ready to ditch the Edward act and try out his comedic acting chops! Rumor has it, our favorite heartthrob is going to play a caricature of himself as one of power agent Ari Gold’s (Jeremy Piven) most high-maintenance clients on the season finale of Entourage. Wouldn’t that be awesome?!

Rob would be joining the long list of A-list guest stars that include, Jessica Alba, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Bono, Jamie Lynn Siegler, Bob Saget and Kanye West (just to name a few), who have made fans laugh with over-the-top exaggerations of themselves.

Who wouldn’t love to see Rob try his hand at making fans laugh? HollywoodLife.com has reached out to both Rob and Entourage’s camps, but neither has confirmed or denied the rumor.

We’re def Team Rob on Entourage!

Darrelle Revis, Jets Agree To 4-Year Deal

s-JETS-NO-REVIS-large NEW YORK — Revis Island is open for business again – just in time for the New York Jets to start what they hope will be a Super Bowl run.

All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis and the Jets agreed in principle to a four-year contract Sunday night, a week before the team's season opener.

He wrote on his Twitter page Monday afternoon that he arrived in New Jersey after flying from his home in South Florida. Revis was not at practice, but was expected to be in uniform Tuesday after signing the deal later Monday.

The Jets wouldn't disclose financial terms, but the Daily News reported it was worth $46 million, including $32 million guaranteed.

"It not has only been hard on u guys, but it has for me too," Revis tweeted early Monday morning. "I just want to tell yall that I'm sorry for this process and I can't wait to get back on the field."

Revis, nicknamed "Revis Island" for his ability to routinely shut down opposing receivers, held out for 36 days.

"This is an intermediate step to what we hope is an entire career of Darrelle as a Jet," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said. "For him to retire a Jet, for him to hopefully go to the Hall of Fame one day as a Jet and for him to be in our ring of honor."

The move capped a busy day for the Jets, who earlier Sunday cut veteran fullback Tony Richardson and waived wide receiver David Clowney and running back Chauncey Washington. New York also claimed wide receiver Patrick Turner (Miami), offensive tackle Patrick Brown (Minnesota) and defensive tackle Marcus Dixon (Dallas).

But, the deal with Revis was by far the biggest news, especially because Tannenbaum acknowledged he wasn't sure it would ever happen. He said the Jets even looked into trades over the weekend for other cornerbacks.Story continues below
